After a 2 year hiatus from the dermatologist, I started researching and meeting with a few dermatologists here in Birmingham. I am super funny about doctors, and am quite hard to please in terms of what makes me feel comfortable. I’m excited to have landed with Skin Wellness Dermatology Center as my new skin experts. This is my experience with microneedling; all opinions are my own, and I will update as I continue with treatments!
Microneedling Before and After
I’ll pretty much try anything once. Like, I don’t love needles (who does?), but if it leads to better overall health or a beauty enhancement… I’m in!
Asia, the esthetisian specialist at Skin Wellness, suggested that we start with microneedling since I had expressed concerns with acne scars from my middle and high school years.
Microneedling is a minimally invasive skin procedure that stimulates collagen growth. The mechanical pen is filled with 14 tiny needles that roll over the skin. As it vibrates microinjections are delivered, penetrating the skin countless times over the course of a few seconds. The needles are used to create a controlled skin injury, which in turn produces collagen during the process to heal the skin.
One of the main benefits to miconeedling is collagen stimulation. While we all are born with an abundance of collagen in our skin, the body stops producing it in our mid to late 20s. So, at almost 27 years old, I am becoming more concerned with ways in which I can continue to produce collagen, as a anti-aging preventative.

Microneedling Costs
Now to the most asked question I’ve gotten about microneedling, how much does it cost?
I love engaging with all of you on Instagram about topics and recently you have been especially vocal about skin care! I received a few messages from girlfriends who have experienced microneedling, and got nothing but positive reviews like, “Best thing I’ve ever done for my skin“, and “You are going to love the results!“
If this doesn’t get you excited, I don’t know what does.
We all have different skin types and I think that’s what makes advice on this topic so difficult. I can only tell you about my experience, but I started asking questions to my friends so I could offer another point of view!
A girlfriend of mine from Nashville said she pays $300-$400 for each treatment. If you live in Birmingham, I am happy to report good news!

Microneedling Results
Microneedling typically causes mild skin redness that lasts for a few days. This treatment can improve the appearance of large pores, fine lines and wrinkles, scars, and stretch marks.
How long for the redness to go down?
The redness after a microneedling procedure is most intense for the first 12 hours. Expect to be beet red and imagine the worst sunburn you’ve ever had; that’s the look. You’ll also be a bit numb from the topical anesthetic for a couple hours after the procedure.
How bad is the pain?
It definitely isn’t 100% painless; beauty comes with some pain, right! I could feel little pricks on my face during the 20 minute process. But as I relate from my own experiences… my period cramps hurt worse today than the microneedling, so glean from that what you will.
What is the main purpose? Who is a good candidate for microneedling.
The main purpose of microneedling is collagen stimulation. Anyone can get microneedling and it’s safe for all skin types. It is a great anti-aging treatment tool, and it’s also an effective way to reduce the appearance of acne scars, scars, and stretch marks.
What’s the cost?
Usually the cost is $400 per treatment for the full face, but Skin Wellness Center in Homewood is having a $300 special during August, or you can sign up for their LUXE program for $175/month and receive a skin treatment of your choice per month, which includes microneedling as one of the options.
How quickly will you see results?
The experts at Skin Wellness recommend at least 3 treatments to see a difference with scar issues. For anti-aging or just maintenance, you can see a difference after 1 or 2 sessions.
