Cinco de Mayo is almost here! Every May 5th, we dedicate the entire day to celebrating all the wonderful flavors and traditions the Mexican culture has brought to America. If you’ve ever been to Mexico, you know the days start early, and so does the drinking! My husband and I went to Tulum, Mexico on our honeymoon in 2016 and fell in love with the people, the food, and this hat I’m wearing above! My favorite part about waking up was having refried beans served with breakfast; I know that may sound weird, but they were quite delicious with a fried egg.
The Official Drink of Cinco de Mayo
To kickoff Cinco de Mayo, my girlfriends and I will host a boozy brunch featuring our favorites, which include Micheladas and a huevos rancheros bar. If you are not familiar with the Michelada, neither was I until a few years ago! I had my very first taste when visiting a bar in San Antonio. Come to find out, the Michelada is the official drink of Cinco de Mayo!
To give you a preview of the taste, it’s like a fizzy Bloody Mary! The Clamato® is a refreshing tomato juice that adds incredible flavor to cocktails and cooking. Adding Mexican beer, hot sauce, and lime juice make this drink a fiesta in your mouth!
Cinco de Mayo Brunch
To get ready for Cinco de Mayo brunch, we’ll stop by our local Walmart to pick up everything we need. Walmart is our one-stop-shop for fresh produce, libation ingredients, and decorations. Now, let’s get to mixing some pretty cocktails!
Fiesta Cocktail Glasses
A cocktail party trick that I love and use often is rimming the drink glass with fun and interesting flavors. For Cinco de Mayo we’ll spice it up by adding chili powder and red pepper flakes! I learned this particular pairing on our most recent girls trip to Miami.
Making a simple syrup allows the spices to stick to the glass:
- Heat 1 cup of water and 1 cup of sugar over medium-high heat until sugar dissolves completely.
- Let cool, then dip half of a low ball glass into the simple syrup.
- Quickly press the glass into chili powder followed by the red pepper flakes. Let stand for 1-2 minutes.
Note: drink out of opposite side of the spices or with straw
