This week we are celebrating big in the Magic City! After ten years of being nominated as a James Beard finalist, Frank Stitt has finally snagged his well deserved James Beard medal for Outstanding Restaurant and Outstanding Pastry Chef. Hats off to you and your team!
But there’s also a cool new guy in town, as Birmingham now has its very first German Biergarten.

Brät Brot | German Biergarten in Birmingham
The owners of Brät Brot also own another popular gastropub called Carrigan’s, and if you’ve ever been to Carrigan’s you know the bar is the main focus that draws people in. Brät Brot is no different.
The large concrete bar circles around beer taps filled with German brews, as well as local ones. The beers I tasted were very good, a nice mild flavor and left no bitter aftertaste. In my experience, some of our local breweries have quite a few beers possessing that stronger quality, but I myself prefer a milder, gentler brewski. However, if you’re into funky, they have that too!
Another important note about their bar menu is they do serve wine and a few liquors. Jagerbombs anyone?
Usually, in write-ups like this, you’d hear “go for the (blank), stay for the (blank). I say just go, period. Every aspect of Brat Brot is worth it.
This new gastropub is located in the Lakeview District of Downtown Birmingham at 2910 6th Ave S, Birmingham, AL 35233

Brät Brot Menu
The food menu is just as German as you’d hope. Bratwursts, pretzels, spätzle, and schnitzel all grace the menu, so don’t be afraid to dive right in. The flavors are really palate friendly! Our favorites included the schnitzel fingers, which are chicken fingers breaded in a pretzel dust, the garten fries with smoked mayo, and the pickled veggies!
German Beer Hall in Birmingham, AL
Get adventurous with your beer selection! The Lager, Weiss, or Kölsch are all good choices, and when they ask what size, just say the big one! It’s an arm workout, but its necessary to get the full-on experience.
Even if you’re not a major foodie or big drinker, I highly recommend visiting Brät Brot solely for the views. When you arrive, you’re greeted by a dramatic Tudor-looking building, but when you enter you are surrounded by a large skylight covered space with lush green plant life all around! Brät Brot actually used to be occupied by a nursery, so there’s even more greenery outside you’ll want to check out. Oh, yeah and some minor taxidermies…
New Breweries in Birmingham, AL
We love this new German Biergarten in Birmingham because of its unique menu and atmosphere. The long tables are so inviting and make you feel like there’s enough seating for everyone in the city! So happy to have Brät Brot a part of the Birmingham family!
