If you follow me on Instagram, you may already have seen where we announced that we are building a house! This is something that my husband has always wanted to do because he loves new. I, however, really love the character and history that comes with an older home, so I never thought that I would want to build, but instead maybe renovate.
But, building a new house doesn’t mean you lose character. There are so many ways to decorate and furnish your home in ways that create that “lived-in look.”
Today I’m sharing with you some of my interior design inspiration, and how I’m planning to tackle decorating a new construction build. Like where do you even start!?
New House Build Interior Design
Our specific building project is “semi-custom” meaning our builders have set plans and finishes where you are then able to customize it to your taste and needs. I feel like this is the perfect stepping stone for newbie homeowners to get their feet wet with the whole building process. Both my husband and I work full time, so I just can’t imagine there would be enough time for us to completely build from scratch.
We are working with Signature Homes, and it’s honestly been the smoothest process so far. Our builder has a full-time designer that we’ve been working with to customize the home. In the final meeting with our designer, I had everything picked out — in my head and on paper. I love creating mood boards on Canva to make sure what I’m envisioning comes together.
Design Meeting Mishap
I assured my husband (Ty) that there was no reason for him to take time off of work to come to the design meeting since I already had everything picked out, but he insisted! He knows I tend to let my vision and emotions get in the way and the budget goes right out the door! Can you relate?
Kitchen Cabinets: Grey vs White
It won’t come as any surprise that I am most excited about designing a new kitchen. I dream about kitchens and covet them everywhere I go. I’ve been gathering ideas for my dream kitchen for years and years.
In our design meeting, I start spewing off my selections for the kitchen which of course includes white cabinets, quartz countertops, and brass drawer pulls, and then Ty throws a wrench in my plans…
He says, “I don’t want all white”
Eh-um, excuse me? White kitchens are all the rage, right? So crisp and clean! I love white kitchens layered with wooden accents, copper pans, and rugged dish towels. Honestly, I was not ok at this point. You know when you’re dead set on something and that’s all you can visualize?
Well, he made a few good points, but not enough to convince me…
We spent almost 2 HOURS going around to other new builds in the neighborhood to view their selections to compare and contrast what we liked versus what we didn’t like.
After much contemplation, I signed off on grey cabinets for the kitchen… and I’m so glad I did! At the end of the day, I really want this house to feel warm and inviting, and a place where I know we both had say in the design. They are going to be beautiful!
Spoiler Alert: the enlarged island will be all white! #winning
Interior Design Tips for First Time Home Buyers
Now that Ty got his say in the kitchen, I can return to my master plan! I’m no designer, but I have become really interested in interior design over the past few years.
Previously, home decor was never really a passion for me, and I don’t think it is for most until you get older and have your own space to decorate. Truthfully, in our first apartment, I didn’t give much thought to the design because at that juncture in life, we weren’t spending a ton of time at home. More importantly, furniture is expensive so we gathered hand-me-downs from family, and we’re so grateful to furnish with those in the meantime. We will definitely be carrying a few pieces with us to the new house!
Collected for the Home
After working for a furniture company for a few years, I gained a ton of knowledge about the interior design and furniture industry and quickly became obsessed with all things home. So passionate, in fact, that last year I co-founded a home decor e-commerce business called Collected for the Home. My business partner and I really wanted to bring something unique to the market. So our mission is to bring our customers approachable and affordable ways to style their homes. I get a lot of my home decor inspiration online from different interior designers, but a lot of their pieces are insanely expensive. Trust me, you can create a well-styled home with tons of texture and character without breaking the bank! Check out some of our affordable art, rugs, pillows and more on collectedforthehome.com
So, while I’m not a designer by trade, I still find it fun to style spaces and I’ll take you through my process of planning and designing our new home!
A Rookie’s Plan for Designing a House
When it comes to choosing furniture and designing a brand new house I think it’s first important to take inventory of what you already have, then hit the internet and stores to find inspiration!
The kitchen is one of the most important rooms in a house and I think a close second would be the living area. These two rooms are where you and your guests will spend the majority of your time so I think it’s only natural that your thoughts, time, and money go towards the kitchen and living room first when designing a home.
Here are some of my current inspiration photos from designers I love following online, and a few items I have my eye on!
