Earl Grey Cocktail

Spring Cocktail Recipes

New season, new cocktails! I love all the beautiful flowers that come with spring. The azaleas are so pretty this time of year in Alabama and we have some gorgeous pink ones that surround our house in Birmingham. We’ve been having some issues with Bonnie digging in the backyard, so we’re working to correct this issue.. any suggestions? Ah, yes. I thought you might say a few cocktails would help. This earl grey cocktail is the perfect distraction from recognizing that our yard looks like a scene out of the movie “Holes,” and it also has all of the floral notes of spring that we love.

What is Earl Grey Tea?

Early Grey Tea is a flavored tea that is widely known to be the Brit’s drink of choice. The tea ingredients include fruit rinds, flowers, oils, and extracts. This British tea is typically a “black” tea base flavored with bergamot orange, and citrus fruits like lemon, lime and grapefruit.

Herbal Tea Cocktails

I was first introduced to tea in a cocktail when I visited Bamboo on 2nd earlier this year in Downtown Birmingham. I cannot believe it took me this long to try this amazing sushi restaurant. New places are popping up all the time in Birmingham’s rising food scene, and its hard to hit them all. Alas, when we arrived at Bamboo on 2nd, I scanned the cocktail menu and found gin (check), lemon (check), and earl grey simple syrup? Thirsty and curious, I decided to give it a try!

Their “Touch of Grey” cocktail was shaken and served up in a martini glass. It was so delicious, I think I may have ordered another!

Earl Grey Cocktail Inspiration

A month later when we visited New Orleans, I ran into another earl grey simple syrup drink, and immediately had to order! The Coterie’s Palmer 75 had earl grey simple syrup, blueberry vodka, lemon, and soda. It was served in a hurricane glass over ice, and I sipped it down (quickly) with a straw.

Now that you have some backstory on where I found my inspiration for an early grey cocktail, I’m sure you are all wondering what I’m going to name my mashup.

I took to Instagram to ask my followers for their vote and suggestions on what to name this new cocktail. Here are the options they had to vote on:

1. 50 Shades of Earl
2. Never too Earl-y (for a cocktail)
3. Happily Grey

Of course, we had lots of votes for #1 and I thought we would, considering the fanfare around the film “50 Shades of Gray.” #2 is punchy and we had lots of votes for that one too! The third name suggestion, I snagged from one of my favorite fashion bloggers, @happilygrey.

Ultimately, the winner is….

Never to Earl-y (for a cocktail)

It was a close race between this and 50 Shades of Earl, but I’m so happy you guys ended up picking my favorite one! All your participation and suggestions are greatly appreciated; now let’s get to mixing.

Here’s what you’ll need:
