7 Tips to Help Your New Years Resolutions Come to Life

Roadmap to Setting New Years Goals

The new year is here and it’s time to reflect, reprioritize and revive! Here are 7 key points to check off your list to ensure you have a successful year.

  1. Invest in a Planner or Calendar

You may find this in the form of a tangible notebook or a virtual one. For me, writing things down with pen and paper helps me remember and enables tasks and goals to become a reality. This is the planner I use. If something is due, or I need a reminder I use Google Calendar for that, as both are beneficial in planning and executing.

  1. Create a Vision Board

We’ll get to goals later, but a vision board is a great place to start to gather information for which goals you might want to set. Get on Pinterest, or cut out a quote from a book or magazine. What’s driving your passions this year; fitness, mental strength, a promotion at work? Create a collage of all the things that inspire you and post it somewhere you will see each day. Canva is a great online tool to use, set it as the background on your laptop or phone as a daily reminder of your end game.

  1. Organize Your Home

No matter what your goals are for the year, begin with a purge. Most of the time this will be in your closet and in the kitchen. Staying organized helps to reach your goals with greater ease. If exercise and meal planning are on your goals list, then clearing out your closet and pairing your workout clothes will help get you out the door for those early morning workouts just a little faster, and organizing your pantry will help you find your meal prep containers that much easier. Small changes lead to big results.

  1. Start One New Thing

Definitely not a new language, we’re talking something really small here. Maybe it’s waking up 20 minutes earlier in the mornings to train your brain when you actually start those 5:30 AM workouts. Or maybe starting a new skincare regimen. I always feel like I have my life together when I’m actively taking care of my skin.

A recent article in Style Blueprint sparked some fire and inspiration in me. You can read more about the morning routines of Birmingham’s most successful women on the SB website now. Highly recommend!

  1. Cut Out One Thing

The Southern Source community on Instagram agrees that diets are for the birds. It’s all about creating a lifestyle, and I think the reason most people fail to see their New Year’s Resolution through is that their goals are too lofty. Start by cutting one thing out. For you, maybe it’s eliminating soft drinks, alcohol, fried foods, or even toxic relationships. Let’s be real, you can’t cut out a relationship and french fries all on the same day! #toomuchtoosoon

  1. Set 3 Goals

Now that you’ve gathered some inspiration, cleaned house (both home and relationships), I think you’re ready to set some goals!

A few years ago, the company I work for hired a Time Management specialist to come in and speak. Her name was Helen and she was a spitfire from Brooklyn. As you can imagine her expressive personality and boisterous tone didn’t go over well with some of our sweet southern employees. I, on the other hand, thought she was hilarious and full of great tips on how to be successful. She told us to set 3 goals.

Write this down on a sticky note and put it on your desk, or in your car. Seeing those goals every day makes the difference. Y’all, this is literally how I started this blog!! Starting it was on my original list in April when she came to our office. Four months later, I launched The Southern Source!

  1. Join a Community

If you’re reading this post, then you are on the right track! Getting an accountability partner or joining a group to keep you motivated during the new year is so important.
